چکیده

The water bodies of the Northwestern Russia significantly influence the regional climate and ecology and in its turn are also effected by global and regional climate change. Ice parameters, such as the duration of ice cover, ice thickness and some others are sensitive indicators of regional climate variations [1]. Freeze-up in Ladoga Lake, which is the largest in Europe, usually starts in November in the shallow coastal parts and ice thickness increases until March when it reaches 46 cm in an “average” winter. The thickest ice (80-100 cm) was observed in the south-eastern shallow part of the lake, and the thinnest (30-60 cm) – in the deep northern area near Valaam island. Ice cover in March varies from 30% to 100%, depending on winter severity. Areas of fast and drifting ice can be identified in the lake. Melting starts in early April and by May 15-20 Ladoga Lake is completely ice-free [2].

Ers Sar Data Application Use for Studying Sea Ice Parameters and Retrieving of Greenland Seals Migration

Airborne observations of the ocean in IR and visible range became now an indispensable part of fish industry. An application of satellite data to studying the number of population of sea mammals has been attractive for biologists for a long period. However, the practical use of satellite information to study the behavior of sea mammals was restrained by its small spatial resolution. Additional ...

Unique Phenomena in Lake Baikal, Russia Imaged and Studied with SAR and Multi-Sensor Imagery

Lake Baikal in Russia, Eastern Siberia, is the deepest freshwater lake in the world, represents itself specific hydrological/weather regimes as well as different phenomena. Among them are local winds, giant ice rings and oil seeps. These phenomena leave pronounced footprints on the lake surface and in ice cover, and they can be imaged, mapped and studied by remote sensing, in particular by synt...

Satellite Microwave Radar Observations of Climate-related Sea-ice Anomalies

Since 1991 a number of international satellites have collected microwave radar image data over Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. The recent successful launch of the ADEOS I satellite, with the NASA NSCAT instrument, also enables additional weather-independent global sea-ice radar data to be acquired and archived in the US. With its pair of 500 km-wide parallel swathes, this radar scatterometer is c...

Multisensor data and thermodynamic sea-ice model based sea-ice thickness chart with application to the Kara Sea, Arctic Russia

We introduce a method to construct an ice thickness chart using two satellite datasets and a one-dimensional high-resolution thermodynamic snow and sea-ice model (HIGHTSI). Thin-ice thickness up to 40 cm is retrieved using MODIS ice surface temperature data. For thicker ice, thickness is retrieved from a combination of SAR image and background level ice thickness chart Hi provided by HIGHTSI. B...

Iceberg signatures and detection in SAR images in two test 1 regions of the Weddell Sea , Antarctica

A pixel-based methodology was established for automatic identification of icebergs 6 in satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, which were acquired during different seasons 7 and for different sea ice conditions. This includes in particular smaller icebergs (longitudinal axis 8 between 100 m and 18.5 km). Investigations were carried out for two test regions located in the 9 Weddell Sea...
